First appearance: Spider-Man: Chapter One #1

chap1

John Byrne’s “new” rendition of the classic wrestling costume. The only perceivable difference is the costume now is a sweat-shirt, instead of a button-down shirt. These types of changes are similar to what was ret-conned throughout the series.

First appearance: Smallville Episodes 1,2

I am still a “True Believer”, these episodes show tangents to Marvel Comics in many ways. First off, as Your Man at Marvel pointed out, this show is basically “Ultimate Superman”. Secondly, the villian in this episode, Greg Arcan, is a geeky science whiz. Greg, gets pushed around by the “Flash” Thompson-esque Whitney. This kid has glasses and is stung by some Kryptonite-infected bees, he is also refered to as Bug-Boy. He becomes able to shoot webs out of his mouth, recieves enhanced strength, speed and agility and can climb on walls. Scary Stuff. There are lots of bad bug sub-references in the second episode.

First appearance: Timeslip: The Collection #1

This is simply Mike Allred’s idea of how Spider-Man would be made in the modern times. Timeslip is pretty much “Millenium Visions”, except from ’98. Timeslip-man has the same origin as the original. It’s cool. By the way, Mike Allred is an impressive “4” on my list of the coolest artists. Just thought I’d let you know that he’s the man.

First appearance: What If? #88

badspider

This is a what if story, here is the background. What if Peter Parker didn’t become a hero? What if he became a flesh-eating monster by night? What if he had married Gwen Stacy, who died giving birth to their son? What if Peter’s son, Ben, had the same illness as Peter?
Well, this is what would happen: Peter Parker is working on developing a serum to cure him and his son. Meanwhile, at the school, Ben gets beaten with a baseball bat by “Flash”‘s son, Butch, because Ben is a mutie. Mary Jane’s daughter, Sarah, steps in and kicks butch in the jimmy, thus allowing Ben time to escape. Ben gets mad, and tries to get run over by a train, but Sarah saves him. Ben’s face is revealed, and boy is he ugly. Sarah says she wants to help him, but he runs off anyway. After a father-son confrontation between Ben and Peter, Pete changes into the ugly form and eats his dog. There are three pages of father-son confrontation following that, because Peter wants to send Ben to Xavier’s school for the gifted blah blah blah. Ben runs away to talk to Sarah, when he finds her he starts to morph. Butch shows up to beat up Ben, Ben gets one good shot in before Butch starts breaking his bones. Sarah leaves the battle scene to find Peter. Peter finds out that Ben may get killed, and then morphs. It turns out that Ben had already killed Butch. His last words are “Parker”, Flash think he meant Peter, so he gets his buddy racists to go find Peter. Some policemen find Ben (who is morphed), thinking he is Peter. Ben escapes the policemen only to be found by the ever-so-hateable FoH. (That’s the “Friends of Humanity, for you non-X-Men readers) Ben gets shot at and beaten until Peter (who is also morphed) sacrifises himself for Ben. Ben ends up going to the X-Mansion.

This was a really good read. Despite the surprising amounts of violence, there is a lot good content. It’s one of those comics that almost (I said “almost”) makes me, I mean you cry. The art is good too.

Costume of the Month for February 2001 is…

First appearance: Prime #Infinity

primespidey

This is what happens when a superhero (Prime) tries to help out Spider-Man when his (Prime’s) powers aren’t working for some reason. Prime’s host tried to “Prime Up” but instead changed into this freak! He sprouted four additional arms immediately after mutating. Although the plot of the book was weak, the costume is cool.

Spider-Man Unlimited

First appearance: Spider-Man Unlimited #1 (Vol. II)

sunl

This costume was made for the TV show with the same name as the comic book. The cancellation series was an ill-fated result of Poke-Mania. The costume is capable of many cool things. It has “stealth” mode, infinite webbing, and it can turn into any kind of clothing that Peter wants. As if that isn’t enough, it can be used as an astronaut’s spacesuit.

The series took place on an alternate earth ruled by High Evolutionary and Wundagorian animals. Humans are second-class citizens, and are frequently sought to be attacked. Carnage and Venom are buddies in this reality. The Green Goblin is a good guy who teams up with Spidey. It was kinda cool while it lasted.

The Spider

First appearance: Exiles #12

thespider

This is Peter Parker from another world, who has joined the Weapon X. For you non-readers, they go around righting the wrongs on different planets/alternate universes. If they fail, they are screwed. This Peter Parker is known as the Spider. He has bonded with a symbiote, presumably Carnage. The Symbiote has a lot of influence on him and this guy is a total masochist. He has a bit of a potty mouth, and has killed (many times) before. He doesn’t shoot webs, his symbiote has crap come out of his fingertips. It looks like he is more of a brooding type of character.

Ultimate Spider-Venom

First Appearance: Ultimate Spider-Man #36

venom

Well, Bendis continues to amaze us with his ability to write the perfect Spider-Man. We’ve waited a couple years for Venom and it was worth it. In this universe, the symbiote was designed to cure cancer. It was also created by Peter’s dad and Eddie Brock’s father. Both of which have passed away. However, the formula was screwy and Peter was affected by the symbiote and almost killed a street thug. He gave up the costume and Eddie started using it. Just buy the comics, they rock.

Costume of the Month for December 2000 is…

First appearance: Ultimate Spider-Man #3

This is from an alternate reality and all he did in this costume was beat Crusher Hogan twice and make $500. I decided to use this because my low expectations for Ultimate Spider-Man were disproved. Here is the normal realities equivilent:
